Every once in a while, someone will say, "Hey, whatever happened to Lindsay Lohan?"
After all, she was the It Girl of the early 2000s after her starring role in the iconic hit Mean Girls turned her into a teen idol. She was poised for success, but, instead, her life seemed to descend into an endless tabloid story filled with substance abuse, eating disorders, reckless driving, money troubles, and legal disputes. She virtually disappeared from the limelight, and when you read the occasional story about her now, it tends to either be tragic (e.g.: the viral video of her ex-boyfriend, Egor Tarabasov, appearing to physically abuse her) or bizarre (e.g.: when she decided to suddenly have a weird foreign accent). Her name has become synonymous with the term cautionary tale.
Now, a new profile by The New York Times finally answers the question of whatever happened to her, and, thankfully, she seems pretty OK.
The interview took place at the the newly opened Lohan Beach House in Mykonos, Greece, where she appears to be living out her early 30s in relative peace. These days, she's focusing on her brand, dipping her foot back into acting, meditating, and putting the past behind her—which means she's also not that keen on coming back stateside anytime soon.
"It's the safest place. It's less demanding. America is always like, 'Go go go go go!'" Lohan said. "I don't have to turn on the news and see about the Kardashians. I don't have to see anything anymore. I choose what I want to see and how I want to live."
But that doesn't mean she hasn't heard the news. On July 4th of last year, she made headlines for defending President Trump on her Twitter account (which has since been deleted). Speaking of Trump, she wrote, "Stop #bullying him & start trusting him. Thank you personally for supporting #THEUSA," followed by another tweet that said, "@realDonaldTrump @IvankaTrump @FLOTUS@DonaldJTrumpJr are kind people. As an American, why speak poorly of anyone? #FAITH#July4th."
The comments were not well-received by many, and were especially puzzling given what Trump has said about her in the past. In a 2004 interview, Trump debated whether the freckles on her chest made her more or less sexually attractive. She was 18 at the time. He also made some truly awful comments about mental health and women in general. "She's probably deeply troubled and therefore great in bed," Trump told Howard Stern. "How come the deeply troubled women, you know, deeply, deeply troubled, they're always the best in bed?"
This time around, when asked asked directly how she felt about the president, Lohan was diplomatic, but her comments certainly make her seem like a fan.
"Here's the thing: very simple with politics," she said in the profile. "He's the president. No matter what anyone says, he's still the president. I have no feeling. I have no emotion."
The fact that she was wearing a red baseball hat stamped with the word "RUSSIA" doesn't help.
Politics aside, it's nice to know that Lohan is on a path that includes plenty of self-care. And, hey, if Britney Spears can make a comeback, maybe she can too.
